CARVING

With the largest sections of excess material removed, begin to carve, using a basic straight bladed carving knife, which should be razor sharp. Do not underestimate these tools. With your free hand in a leather glove and a leather thumb guard on your knife hand, pull the knife toward your thumb. Don’t try to move your arm; just close your hand like you would with a pair of scissors. Make small shallow strokes until you get the feel of the wood. Take a seat—carving is a relaxing activity, which is good because it takes a while. Continue carving until you’re happy with the overall shape.
